Torneo del Dia de Paz

On Saturday, six teams from the surrounding areas of Granada (two of the teams made up of girls from Granada and the FSF program) participated in a tournament affiliated with the United Nations Day of Peace. The girls first listened to a manifest describing the nature in which the tournament was held and then signed the manifest as a symbol of their compliance with the ideals and spirit of the tournament. The manifest of peace states: respect all forms of life, reject all forms of violence, share that which you have, listen to learn, conservation of our planet, and contribute to the development of community.

After each girl signed the manifest, the tournament commenced and gave way to a great mix of intense competition and sportsman like behavior. We were lucky enough to secure one quarter of the baseball fields where the boys play baseball and soccer, otherwise our girls would have had to team up in boats and hit the ball with their paddles on our field which is currently part of Lake Nicaragua. We lent every team uniforms, allowed the four semi-finalists to keep their uniforms and also gave each team a ball as a consolation prize for participation in the event. Starting at 2 and ending at 6, it was a long day of soccer for the girls. One of the two teams that was comprised almost entirely of FSF girls advanced to the final and went on to win it all, after an emotional pk finish.
