Although the focus for this Saturday's practice was defense, the word of the day was Goalaso!!! Thanks to our new Pugg goals, the girls shot, scored, and celebrated with a ton of enthusiasm!
After a warm up of tail tag and stretching, we broke the girls up into groups of 5 to play 4 vs 1 with a youth coach helping each group. The girls were instructed to focus on being patient as a defender, not dive in, and wait for their chance to win the ball. I was lucky enough to join one of the older girls groups because we were down numbers and I certainly needed to be patient on defense. On one occasion I was caught in the middle for a good minute or so, which in this heat feels like ten.
With a quick break for water, we broke the girls up into four teams and played mini games on two fields. The girls love to play regardless, but the appearance of goals with nets brought the level of competition and enthusiasm to a new high. We all owe Pugg a big thanks for the donation and can't wait to use them again this weekend for the kick off of our Futbol Sin Fronteras league. This week, Boston and I will be visiting schools in the area to promote the league and encourage more players to come out. We are planning on having two divisions of four teams(maybe even six!), complete with a youth coach and uniforms for each team. Should be exciting!
