Confession- by Mary

Okay so I feel the need to confess that although this is my fifth trip to Granada, until now I have never before had the "bucket shower" experience. I always laugh along with other volunteers in various houses that use the bucket, but until now I had never had the pleasure of untangling and cleaning the rats nest on my head using only a bucket. My lack of experience was due in part to the fact that when the water goes out in Granada, I used to just patiently wait for it to return, having endless faith that when I need it the most it will return and wash away the dirt that occupies my every pore.

This time, I could wait no longer. Dirt I can handle. Sweat I can handle. Dirt, sweat, and a day's plane ride worth of stale air and greasy airport food threw me over the edge. After waiting nearly an entire day after I arrived, I found myself finally willing to brave the bucket, not able to wait another minute for the water to return.

It turns out, it wasn't worth the two year build-up. Water, soap, shampoo..it's all the same, it just takes a little less laziness on my part and a little creativity in managing the tangled mess of hair that is permanently matted to my head while I'm here. One step closer to becoming Nica!

One an unrelated but more relevant note, the final members of our spring break group arrive today and are in for an immediate treat...a Granada-wide scavenger hunt challenge with the youth leaders. Ever since January's event with the ninas, Chepe has been scheming for us to hold a similar event for the volunteers and the guys, and today he'll make it happen! The blog will keep everyone posted on the results...hasta luego!
