A special celebration- from Mary

The audience

Lizbeth and her poem

The dancers

Poem recitation

Last night at the Noche de Ninas (Girls' Night), Suyen and the grandes (the older group) prepared a special surprise for the gringas. All week, Suyen had been hard at work in preparation for this event, and we were all locked out of the office while they set the stage, changed into their costumes/outfits, prepared their props, and decorated the office.

In all my time here, I don't think I've ever seen such a beautiful gesture or performance. The grandes performed a series of poems and dances to teach the volunteers about Nicaraguan culture, beginning the night with the singing of the national anthem and ending with a sampling of local foods that they had prepared from scratch. The MC did an incredible job introducing each act, and Lizbeth stole the show by memorizing her poem and reciting it with gusto.

We've been told we need to prepare a similar show to exemplify American culture, but somehow I'm not sure our "traditional dance" would be quite so beautiful.
