Ometepe Coaches Clinic

On June 12th, four of our T.E.A.M. Granada staff members traveled to Ometepe Island to lead a coaches clinic for the girls soccer league there, in addition to providing some equipment support. The clinic and partnership was arranged by the local Peace Corps worker in the area, who had learned about the league in his second year and spoken with the coaches of the teams about their most pressing needs: practice ideas and equipment.

Ometepe is basically a pair of volcanoes joined by an isthmus. The towns are extremely hard to reach and few roads on the island are paved. We were excited to have 5 of the league's coaches join in for the clinic, many taking long, bumpy bus rides to attend.

David, Cesar, Kevin, and Cindy made the trek to Balgue, Ometepe (bus, taxi, ferry, bus!) to administer the clinic. Here are some reactions in their own words:

From David:

Well, the trip was very relaxing, especially on the boat (ferry). Ometepe was a relaxing atmosphere.
When we were heading for Balgüe it looked nice and was beautiful scenery! It was something incredible! Arriving in Balgüe we unpacked our things (bags) and went for a walk. We spent the evening just all talking, Cesar, Cindy, Kevin, Scott and me.

The next day was the training or workshop for Youth coaches, we got up early and went through training booklets. We reached five coaches and the training was a success, they (coaches ometepe) were satisfied with the ideas and contributions that we provided. Later we went for a walk and went to a beautiful river! Then we had dinner and went to bed very early that we had to get up early (5 am) to return to Granada.

The trip was very good, I loved it, people from there are very nice. By the way we saw the game between USA and England!
