Interviews and double sessions

Our neighborhood stalkers
Kevin

It is safe to say our brains hurt after a long day of brainstorming a structure for our new Nicaraguan office. We interviewed a potential director, and presented a part-time role to Suyen as well, who seems to have a million and one great ideas for Futbol Sin Fronteras Nicaragua. While our pencil-drawn organizational flow chart may not be a final draft, we are really excited to be moving in that direction!

Somehow we have now established a regular schedule of double sessions. In an effort to preserve our own playing time with the guys (and some girls!) in town, we have moved the kids sessions to the morning. After some impressive steal the bacon, and some fun games en circulo we split into teams and got playing. My MVP for the day was Kevin, a neighbor of ours who is the unfortunate victim of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Kevin is 16 years old but has the frame of a 10 year old. Two years ago, he had surgery on both of his legs to enable him to walk a bit better. Last year while we were here, Kevin was always asking to see pictures of what we were doing, and of the United States, but he mostly stayed seated in his little chair outside of his house. By the end of our time last year, we gave Kevin a little pair of cleats and a ball, even though most of the neighbors said he would never be able to play. I was so excited to see Kevin play goalie today...he was even able to punt and take goal kicks! My team defense stunk, so Kevin saw a lot of action and managed to keep my team from total embarrassment.

At 4 we had our afternoon session with everyone else...ie. anyone over the age of 12 who wanted to play. We started out with about 12v12 and I have to say Ann and I were worried about the strength of our team when at the beginning we turned around to see one of our defenders peeing on the field. Putting that behind us, we plugged our way to a 4-1 win over Dani and Bens team, whose only goal was scored by Yuelba, a member of the Granada Premier team who was recently called up to the National team. Dani decided to be todays injury (a feat I accomplished yesterday) by throwing herself in front of a punt that Ann was clearly going to win.

What began as an extremely cute following of children has now turned into a somewhat psychotic cult that stands outside our home and screams into the windows while we eat, and attacks us with hugs while we walk. We are considering looking for alternate routes from the house.

That is all for now! Hasta manana!
