Adios escuelas

We finished our rounds in the elementary schools this morning with a trip to a tiny school with a scary looking directora. The directora decided that we would do just one session, since technically they don't have gym class on Fridays, and only with girls. She pulled about 20 girls out of class amidst a chorus of young boys clearly jealous and complaining that "girls don't need to play soccer they just need to learn to cook." This just excited the girls more and they proudly marched down the street to the park for the impromptu gym class.

The park was conveniently situated on the corner between two fairly busy streets. With the assistant director watching from the shade, the ball squirted out into the street during the scrimmage and 20 excited girls all started rushing to hop the fence and chase after it. With visions of massive casualities, we all screamed and beat them to the punch, running out into the street ourselves to show them we were taking care of it. Crisis averted.

We've now invited girls from all over Granada to join us tomorrow for an open practice and celebration of International Women's Day. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be able to report big numbers and a lot of fun!
