Futbol a la playa!

Stellar teamwork
Sweet uniforms

Ready for action

We had our first beach soccer tournament game this morning. All week we had been pretty curious where this "beach" was that is big enough to fit a soccer field. Every time we've been to the beach previously, it's turned out to be about two square yards of dirt right next to the lake. The site of the tournament was a little better, there was definitely sand...unfortunately there were also rocks, glass, roots, and these tiny spiky things that I will refer to as cactii balls. Ironically, when we arrived the field was outlined by familiar cones, and the game ball also looked familiar. Milton had somehow acquired one of our coaching kits and used it for the tournament.

After waiting the standard hour past our scheduled game time, we readied ourselves for kickoff. Footwear choices were barefoot or socks, both with their pros and cons. The pro of bare feet is that the cactii balls don't really have much to grab onto. The con is that burning hot sun + dark volcano sand = scalding hot feet. The pro of socks is that they act as a heat buffer, but the con was that they are cactii ball magnets, especially if you had to fish the ball out of the brush.

Each with our own footwear choices, we joined forced with three of the girls on the premier team against 6 of the other girls on the team. Beach soccer is nothing like real soccer; the old push-the-ball-by-and-run-as-fast-as-you-can move doesn't really work on a bumpy field 20 yards long. We managed to come out on top 2-1 despite our inexperience, and hope to put on a better show tomorrow morning as the tournament continues.
