Rest in peace...every one of us

An unrelated photo of me dancing with Jose Luis, our neighbor and second cutest child on our street...Carolina has competition
We are not the only ones our host family is taking care of on a daily basis. We share the house with a number of animals and plants, including an indoor garden, three fish jars, two dogs, a parakeet, and several "doves" that look strikingly like pigeons. Once upon a time there was also a rooster who, as roosters tend to do, woke us up every morning promptly with the sunrise.

So the other day Lea and I returned home to see a pot simmering on the stove. Walking by, I noticed something in the pot that I thought was an octopus tentacle, and warned Kief not to accept any Spanish invitations for food, as she would surely end up with tentacle soup. She glanced in the pot as well and whispered "Mary that´s a claw, let´s hope they are just making chicken stock."

Later that afternoon, Molly and Elise were discussing an exchange they witnessed in the morning between our host Mom and the two daughters. Mom was complaining that the rooster was pecking at and eating all the eggs, and that she wanted to kill it. Thinking she was joking, the girls got ready to head to the market. Not kidding at all, Mom says "Alejandra, you go to the market, Fernanda, you stay home and kill the rooster." Not your everyday chore list!

Take a minute, put two and two together...

Rest in peace, rooster....the rest of us will too!*

*I thought this would be true but apparently the neighbors also have a rooster.
