La Selection National

Niñas de la equipo vamos aqui para los photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/molly.luft/NicaU20NationalTeam

partner stretching
Today we spent the morning at the U20 National team practice in Managua. The girls really enjoyed having their photos taken and asked us to post them on the web, hence the link above and the poor attempt at spanish...

The practice was really interesting to watch. I will try to control my usual tendency to pick things apart and just say that it is quite different from the timely, ball oriented training sessions that we are used to. A lot of lap running was going on at the field. We are a little nervous because we have been invited to come back and play with them in their practice on Monday afternoon...I´m not sure my lap running is up to par. Or my partner stretching, although partner stretching is something I´m willing to work on. The U20 national team has qualified for the World Cup qualifier, which will take place in the US sometime in May, if my spanish doesn´t fail me. If they place in the top 3 at the tournament, they qualify for the World Cup which takes place in Chile in November.

The internet cafe is kicking me out so I need to sign off here. We had some big meetings yesterday with Milton and some of the girls on the premier team here in Granada. The girls agreed to take over Saturday morning practices with the little girls once we leave, and to help paint the futsal field, and Milton agreed to help us organize an interschool tournament the weekend before we leave. With less than two weeks remaining, we´re hoping to really start to tie things together and have a better vision of where things will go from here, so that the project can continue to progress until future volunteers return to Granada later this year.

As a side note, Annie has taken over the role of fearless translator as Dani was forced to return to real life this morning. Her interview with the head of Futbol Feminino in Nicaragua as well as the coach and players of the U20 team will appear shortly on soccerwithoutborders.blogspot.com. In the meantime, Annie has already managed to drag me up a smoking volcano...I´m still coughing sulfur!
